Bee Friendly Accreditation
This week Leckwith Droves Allotments was successful in achieving accreditation as part of the Welsh Government's 'Bee Friendly' scheme. This recognises the work carried out to date and future planned work committed to in an action plan. It recognises the work undertaken by the allotmen's 'Wildlife Group' and the support of the site's committee.
The group and the committee are working hard to promote pollinators on the site and will be carrying out pollinator friendly planting on both individual allotment plots and in a number of communal areas. The committee have undertaken not to stock herbicides and pesticides, building upon earlier commitments to go totally peat free with compost purchases and not to stock slug pellets. The committee has also pledged to consider carefully when strimming and maintenance of certain areas are undertaken. The committee has provided funds for the purchase of specialist Bee Houses and the Wildlife Group are planning to build more. A number of community events and workshops are planned to carry this work forward and both the group and committee will use notices, the website and Facebook group to educate and inform about the importance of pollinators of all kinds.
The Welsh Government's appointed 'Bee Champion', who assessed the project thinks we are the first allotment site in Wales to have successfully applied and been awarded it and we feel this is an achievement which needs to celebrated to encourage other sites to make similar commitments.
